Courting Ducks Down By The PondApril Photography Life Down By the Pond.

Just as in March for the UK,  there’s a hive of activity going on down by the pond, waiting to be photographed…
Only more so for April!

With the sun peeking out from behind those clouds, the bird life and small animals relish those moments. The water birds, ducks, geese and swans are busy celebrating life and the new season unfolding. Showing off for each other “and the camera” means lots of action, courting, fighting and mating.

With much patience, positioning and waiting means at least one or two special “keeper” photos will be yours. The best chances of a truly worthwhile capture will be with a camera that’s got at least a 300mm tele-focal or zoom lens. This way you can observe and photograph from a fair distance without disturbing any of the play going on. Birds are constantly taking off, landing, chasing each other or fighting. Having a good tele focal lens means you can be there framing each shot.

Because ducks fly at great speed, also means having to set your camera at a much faster shutter speed.
Play around here with your camera settings; try between 1/125 and 1/250. A faster shutter speed captures the action in its tracks, while a slower shutter speed can give your subject a sense of movement and mood. Water reflections taken at a slower shutter speed can offer very interesting patterns and light.

Getting down to the pond this spring with your camera can be very worthwhile, for  you to  take those nature photographs for you album.
